I was born and raised in Glendale, California, attending Eugene Field Elementary School (the site where the school was is now a large housing project), Toll Junior High School, Hoover High School (1963) and Glendale College (1966). After graduating from Glendale College I entered the U.S. Navy ending up as a Radarman 2nd Class on the USS Kearsarge (CVS-33). After my discharge in 1970 I started my career in the food processing equipment business.
Actually, I had worked off and on part time for my Dad (Colin D. Care, Jr.) and Uncle (Bill Care) while going to school. But getting into the family business held no interest for an eighteen year old who knew everything. Funny how the 3-1/2 years I spent in the Navy made my Dad & Uncle a lot smarter! So I went to work for Care Brothers Inc. We were most of the time the largest dealer in the country for Hollymatic Corp., a Chicago based manufacture of food processing equipment.
I started out working on machines in the shop and quickly progressed to a sales, service and delivery territory covering mainly the San Fernando Valley. I worked my way up in the company (after all, I had the right last name!) ending up as President. We sold Care Brothers Inc. to Jay Vee Equipment Co. in 1988. I worked for them for the almost two years they were here then became the General Manager of Care Holly (owned by the owners of Hollymatic) when it was formed in 1990.
My wife, Lynn, who worked with me as office manager of Care Holly, and I decided early in 1997 that we wanted to be on our own with our own business. So we made that big jump, both of us quitting our good jobs to start Doug Care Equipment. We both have been very thankful for the response towards us from all the good folks in Southern California and around the country who have made our business a wonderful success! We decided to get back to Lynn's roots and moved to Springville, CA, in 2003. I discovered that I love the "country" life!
Family
I go by my middle name, Doug, because there were 3 Colin Douglas Care's
in the same house while I was growing up, two of them answering to Colin.
That was so much fun (3 of us) that I named my son Colin Douglas Care IV!
This four generation picture was taken in 1972 three days before my grandfather
passed away.

My son, Colin Douglas Care IV, (Lin) whom I'm holding above is 35
now and is on his way back to Iraq after two previous activations with the National Guard, one in Monterey, Calif. and the other in Baghdad, Iraq. He's a Sgt. First Class with a Henderson, Nevada guard unit. He and his wife Jackie love sky diving. I knew his Army Airborne experience would pay off! Lynn's son, Ken, has six kids, Zachary, Brooke, Faith, Rachel, Joshua and Cloe. They live fairly close to us in Springville.
Our daughters are both married. Lisa, (who married Kyle Williamson in 1998)
now has her teaching credential (and is working on her masters) and has 2 boys, Christian and Dylan. Katie is married to Dan Stegall and has two boys, Daniel and Jonah who was born in September of 2007. They live in Southern California so we get to see them quite often.
That makes a total of ten grand kids! Lynn and I have been married since 1988. Our marriage was the best thing
that ever happened to me! And I don't say that just because Lynn will probably
read this!

While attending Hoover High School and then Glendale College
I was known for the car I drove which was a 1958 Nash Metropolitan. I still
don't know how I fit in it since I was well over six foot tall even in
high school. Here's a picture of one that looks just like my old one!
While attending school at Glendale I worked as a box boy at the old Ralph's #29 market on Colorado in Glendale. It was there that I met some guys that to this day I am close friends with. I joined Beta Phi Sigma fraternity which had members going to Glendale and Pasadena City College. Some of us : Norm Stabeck, Oran Spencer, Bill Hawkins and Alan Spiegel, still get together whenever we can. |
I was on the last two WestPac cruises of the USS Kearsarge (CVS33) in
the late 1960's. I served as a radarman in the C.I.C. (Combat Information
Center.) The picture below is the Kearsarge as I knew her. She was put
into mothballs shortly after I was discharged in 1970 and then sold for
scrap some 10 years later.

Some new links to the USS Kearsarge:
I married Lynn in 1988 and became a Christian a couple of years later. These two events have changed my life in very meaningful ways! We now attend the Porterville Church of Christ in Porterville, California, which is near Springville.
Thanks for stopping by our site. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I have!
